Falkville scores early and often in defeating Danville 56-0 to open the season

The Falkville Blue Devils jumped on Danville early and never let up their 56-0 win over the Hawks on Thursday night.

The Blue Devils were playing their first game of the season after having their season opener forfeited by Decatur Heritage due to COVID-19.

Falkville’s defense set the tone early as their intercepted Danville quarterback Gage Taylor on the Hawks’ first two possessions. The interceptions were returned for touchdowns by Christian Angulo and Austin Holmes to give the Blue Devils an early 14-0 lead.

Falkville extended their lead to 21-0 when Angulo connected with Andrew Jones for a touchdown.

Angulo scored his second touchdown of the game in the second quarter to give the Blue Devils a 28-0 lead.

Angulo finished the game with 59 yards rushing, 38 yards passing, two touchdowns on offense, and a 66-yard interception return for a touchdown.

The Blue Devils scored 14 points in each of the final two quarters to make the final score 56-0.

Three players scored for Falkville in the second half. Jones added a second touchdown reception and Holmes had a rushing touchdown. Jordan Greenfield added two rushing touchdowns.

“We got a couple of breaks early on and capitalized on them,” said Falkville coach Tyler Mitchell. “We had a solid game plan and stuck to it. I am proud of our guys and their great job tonight.”

Falkville (2-0) will open Class 2A, Region 7 play next week as they host Whitesburg Christian (1-1) on Friday night. Danville (1-1) will open Class 3A, Region 8 play on the road at Colbert Heights (1-1).
