Tigers pick up wins over Pell City and Briarwood Christian

The Hartselle Tigers basketball team had a productive week, picking up a couple of wins over Pell City and Briarwood Christian. The Tigers were led by Rylan Smothers, who finished with a double-double in each of the victories.

Hartselle 51, Pell City 50

The Tigers pulled out a 51-50 victory over Pell City after holding off a Panthers fourth-quarter rally. Hartselle led 22-10 after the first and 32-20 at halftime. Pell City cut the lead to 40-34 heading to the final quarter.

Smothers finished with 15 points and 13 rebounds to lead Hartselle. Ty Odom scored a team-high 17 points. Kohl Key and Markus Tapscott finished with five points each. Tapscott also had eight rebounds.

Hartselle 60, Briarwood Christian 46

Hartselle jumped out to a 16-3 first-quarter lead on their way to a 60-46 road win over Briarwood Christian. The Lions cut the lead to 44-40 in the fourth, but the Tigers outscored Briarwood 16-6 down the stretch to get the win.

Smothers led three Tigers in double digits with 19 points. He also had 13 rebounds. Key finished with 17 points, while Odom added 14 points. Tapscott had eight points and five rebounds.

Athens 48, Hartselle 37

The Tigers fell 49-37 on the road at Athens in a matchup between the two rivals. Hartselle led 9-7 after the first quarter but trailed 19-15 at the half. Athens outscored the Tigers by seven in the fourth quarter to get the victory.

Odom led the Tigers with 11 points, while Tapscott added eight points and six rebounds. Smothers and Key each added seven points. Smothers also had five rebounds and two blocks.
