Softball Notebook: Brewer, Danville, and Falkville’s seasons come to a close

The seasons for the Brewer Lady Patriots, the Danville Lady Hawks, and the Falkville Blue Devils came to a close last week in the North Regional tournament in Florence.

Brewer and Danville advanced to the tournament by winning their area tournament, while Falkville advanced with a runner-up finish.

Class 5A

Corner 5, Brewer 2

Brewer dropped their opening game of the tournament to the Corner Yellow Jackets 5-2. Elizabeth Lucas led the Lady Patriots with two hits, including a double and an RBI. Abbey Watkins and Brieonna Voss each had a hit. Bronwyn Borden took the loss after allowing five runs on five hits while striking out eight in seven innings.

Russellville 5, Brewer 4; 13 innings

The Lady Patriots season came to a close in a 13-inning marathon, losing 5-4 to Russellville. Voss finished 2-for-3 with two home runs, three RBIs, and two runs scored for Brewer. Elizabeth Lucas was 4-for-6 with a run scored. Borden pitched all 13 innings, allowing five runs on 13 hits while striking out 11.

Class 3A

Danville 11, JB Pennington 1

The Lady Hawks opened the tournament with an 11-1 victory over JB Pennington. Brityan Godfrey was 3-for-4 with three RBIs and a run scored to lead Danville, while her sister Blayne was 2-for-3 with three runs scored and an RBI. Jorja Coker and Aubrey Reed each hit a home run. Blayne Godfrey picked up the win after allowing one run on four hits while striking out nine.

Plainview 2, Danville 1

Danville fell into the loser’s bracket following a 2-1 loss to Plainview. Brityan Godfrey hit a home run to plate the Lady Hawks lone run of the game. Blayne Godfrey took the loss after allowing two runs on five hits with eight strikeouts.

Lauderdale Co. 1, Danville 0

Another one-run game ended the season for the Lady Hawks as they fell 1-0 to Lauderdale Co. Blayne Godfrey took the loss after the Lady Tigers scored on an unearned run in the bottom of the second inning. Godfrey allowed only four hits and struck out nine. Audrey Marshall, Ellie Tucker, Alana Griffin, Sydney Smith, and Reed each had a hit for Danville.

Class 2A

Pisgah 3, Falkville 0

Pisgah outscored Falkville 3-0 in the first round of the tournament. The Lady Blue Devils were no-hit by the Lady Eagles’ Kennedy Barron. Falkville’s Sydnee Fitzgerald took the loss after allowing three runs on five hits in six innings.

Falkville 13, Red Bay 5

Falkville bounced back with a 13-5 win over Red Bay to keep their tournament hopes alive. Hannah Tillman was 3-for-4 with a grand slam, four RBIs, and two runs scored. Fitzgerald was 2-for-3 with a home run, two RBIs, and two runs scored, while Addy Walker also had two hits, including a home run, three RBIs, and two runs scored. Ellie Lorance scored three runs. Fitzgerald picked up the complete-game win after allowing five runs on five hits.

Falkville 10, Hatton 8

The Lady Blue Devils picked up their first win of the season over Hatton in their biggest game of the year. Falkville battled back from a 5-1 and an 8-6 deficit to stay alive with a 10-8 victory. Fitzgerald was 2-for-4 with a home run, three RBIs, and a run scored. Brooklyn Melson and Kameryn Scales each had two hits, including a home run. Scales had three RBIs and two runs scored. Fitzgerald struck out 10 in the win.

Falkville 6, Lexington 5

Melson’s two-run double in the bottom of the seventh capped the Lady Blue Devils’ comeback as they trailed 5-3 entering the inning. Melson’s double was her only hit of the game. Fitzgerald and Ellie Cate Hill each had two hits and a run scored for Falkville. Fitzgerald struck out six in picking up the win.

Pisgah 12, Falkville 2

Pisgah ended Falkville’s run with a 12-2 victory in the loser’s bracket final. Mackenzie Veal finished 2-for-2 with an RBI and a run scored, while Tillman added a hit and a run scored.
